VPIP
Voluntarily Put money In Pot
What is counted
The share of hands where you voluntarily put money in the pot preflop: a call, a bet or a raise. Posted blinds do not count. A hand where everyone folds to your big blind (a “walk”) is not counted at all: you made no decision in it.
The reference range
20% – 28%
For No Limit 6-max cash games. Judged from 100 opportunities. Sources: DeucesCracked, nlh.poker, PokerSkill.
Outside the range
- Above: You play too many hands. Tighten your opens, especially out of position (UTG, MP, SB).
- Below: You play too few hands. You are letting profitable spots go in position (CO, BTN).
The VPIP / PFR gap
A gap of more than 10 points between VPIP and PFR is flagged separately (source: nlh.poker). Big VPIP / PFR gap: you call far more than you raise. It is the classic leak of losing players.
